- Nakuru’s investment in skills training builds on its ongoing work to strengthen inclusion at the grassroots. On January 23, 2025, Deputy Governor David Kones oversaw the distribution of mobility assistive devices to more than 500 residents in Elburgon, Molo Sub‑County.
Nakuru County Government has unveiled a partnership with international disability inclusion Non‑Governmental Organization (NGO) Light for the World and BOB Inc. to launch the “Power Up Project.” The initiative will equip youth, women, and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) with practical skills that turn environmental challenges into sustainable livelihoods.
The training program begins in mid‑March and runs until December, offering free courses in e‑waste and plastic waste collection as well as repair of phones, laptops, and household appliances. By linking environmental management with economic empowerment, the county is opening new pathways for vulnerable groups to thrive.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Gender and Social Services, Elga Riaga, hosted representatives from both organizations to cement the partnership on March 10, 2026.
“Ms. Riaga emphasized the County's commitment to empowering youth and Persons With Disabilities, with relevant skills,” said the County Government.
Under Governor Susan Kihika’s leadership, Nakuru continues to expand opportunities through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Breaking Barriers for PWDs
Nakuru’s investment in skills training builds on its ongoing work to strengthen inclusion at the grassroots. On January 23, 2025, Deputy Governor David Kones oversaw the distribution of mobility assistive devices to more than 500 residents in Elburgon, Molo Sub‑County.
The exercise, conducted in partnership with Through The Roof, a UK‑based disability charity, and local church leadership, provided wheelchairs, crutches, and hearing aids to residents who have long faced barriers to movement.
Deputy Governor Kones emphasized that Nakuru is amending the Persons with Disabilities Act to streamline service delivery and has allocated Sh27.5 million to the PWD Fund, much of it directed toward assistive devices.
Toward Dignity and Independence
Nakuru has a significant PWD population, yet mobility remains one of the greatest challenges due to inadequate infrastructure. By combining legal reforms, assistive devices, and inclusive training programs, the county is breaking barriers to participation and ensuring that PWDs, youth, and women can move freely, access opportunities, and contribute fully to community life.
