“This exercise from our partners ensures our brothers and sisters living with disabilities have dignity and independence by providing essential mobility aids, especially for those who have faced significant barriers to movement,” said Deputy Governor Kones.

In his address, Kones emphasized that Nakuru County is amending the Persons with Disabilities Act to streamline service delivery and strengthen institutional support systems at the grassroots.

He added that under Governor Susan Kihika’s leadership, the county has allocated Sh27.5 million to the Persons with Disabilities Fund. A significant portion of this allocation will go directly to the provision of assistive devices, including hearing aids and mobility equipment, for PWDs across the county.

The event drew a wide representation of county and national leaders, including: County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) Zipporah Wambui (Education) and Elga Riaga (Youth, Gender, Culture, Sports and Social Services), Chief Officers, Gladys Kamuren (Social Services) and Kennedy Mungai (Infrastructure).

Others include MCAs led by Area MCA Njuguna Mwaura as well as National Government security officials and other invited guests .

Nakuru has a significant PWD population, represented through local disability organizations and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD). Yet mobility remains one of the greatest challenges. Despite progressive laws and policies, everyday movement is hindered by inadequate infrastructure and limited accessibility.

The distribution of assistive devices marks a critical step toward breaking these barriers, ensuring that PWDs can move freely, access opportunities, and participate fully in community life.
