- This year’s global theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” emphasizes the need to build lasting networks that empower mothers and protect the health of future generations.
As the world turns its attention to the health and well-being of mothers and infants, World Breastfeeding Week 2025, spanning August 1 to August 7 offers a moment to reflect, educate, and mobilize around one of the most foundational acts of care: breastfeeding.
This year’s global theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems,” emphasizes the need to build lasting networks that empower mothers and protect the health of future generations.
The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to champion breastfeeding as a cornerstone of public health. In its latest guidance, WHO reminds mothers that their own well-being directly impacts their babies especially during this critical week.
“You can offer the breast more frequently to ensure they stay hydrated. You don’t need to give babies under 6 months additional water or formula – even in hot climates. And don’t forget to look after yourself too! Remember to rest, stay out of the heat and drink more water,” WHO advises.
Beyond hydration and nutrition, WHO emphasizes that breastfeeding is a long-term investment in human potential. It reduces healthcare costs, boosts cognitive development, strengthens economies, and lays the foundation for healthier societies.
