- As the 2027 election looms, Kenya waits with bated breath. Will Sifuna be tied to ODM, or will he seize the challenge and forge his own political destiny?
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been at the center of scorching political controversy after he issued a bold pronouncement that he will quit the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) if the party resolves to support President William Ruto's 2027 re-election bid.
Political analyst Dr. Michael Ndonye has now weighed in, calling on Sifuna to resign from his leadership position and pursue an independent political journey.
Speaking during an interview on The Political Oracle, a segment of The TalkChat Podcast, Dr. Ndonye replied that Sifuna had outshone the shadow of ODM and was now bound to consider having a party of his own. "Edwin Sifuna is a young person with a lot of potential," he stated. “He needs to realize that a good dancer knows when to exit the stage."

Dr. Ndonye pointed out that Sifuna has been under the political wing of ODM party leader Raila Odinga for years—a political apprenticeship that has undoubtedly shaped him but maybe now is inhibiting his own personal political growth.
"Sifuna has been under the ODM and Raila's wing for too long," Dr. Ndonye said. "It's time he cuts loose and lets the world see what he has learned."
Sifuna's weekend remarks also exposed the increasing tension within ODM, particularly in the party's seen tight embrace of President Ruto's UDA.
"I want to assure ODM supporters that my position remains the same," Sifuna maintained, flatly declaring that he would never agree to Ruto's re-election, even when arm-twisted by ODM.
As others have blamed him for weakening the party from within, Sifuna defended his right to hold independent opinion. "Raila himself indicated that this is a democratic party and any member can express their views," he said.
