- Prolonged rainfall can weaken foundations, trigger flooding and landslides, and compromise structures such as buildings, roads, and bridges—raising the risk of injuries, loss of life, and public health emergencies.
The Ministry of Health alerts the public to the increased risk of collapsing buildings and damaged infrastructure during the ongoing March–April–May (MAM) long rains.
Prolonged rainfall can weaken foundations, trigger flooding and landslides, and compromise structures such as buildings, roads, and bridges—raising the risk of injuries, loss of life, and public health emergencies.
The Ministry urges Kenyans to observe strict safety and health measures:
Before and During Heavy Rains
- Avoid occupying buildings that appear cracked, flooded, or structurally unsafe.
- Landlords and property owners should inspect and repair weaknesses such as cracks, weakened walls, and compromised foundations.
- Avoid construction on unstable slopes, riparian areas, and flood‑prone zones.
- Follow advisories from national and county governments, the National Disaster Operations Centre, and other authorities on evacuation from high‑risk areas.
- Report visible structural risks or collapsing infrastructure to local authorities immediately.

- Move away immediately from the affected structure to avoid falling debris.
- Contact emergency responders such as police, fire services, or county disaster teams.
- Do not attempt risky rescues unless safe; allow trained responders to act.
- If someone is trapped, reassure them and inform rescue teams of their location.
Health and First Aid Measures
- Seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility if injured.
- Provide basic first aid where possible.
- Watch for symptoms of shock, severe bleeding, or head injury requiring urgent care.
Preventing Secondary Public Health Risks
- Avoid contact with contaminated floodwater or debris.
- Ensure access to safe drinking water and maintain sanitation to prevent waterborne diseases.
- Dispose of debris safely and avoid exposed electrical lines or damaged gas systems.
- Maintain hygiene, especially when assisting injured persons.
Community Preparedness
- Identify safe evacuation routes and community assembly points.
- Establish community alert systems to warn residents of structural hazards.
- Support vulnerable populations—including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities—during evacuations.
The Ministry notes that incidents involving collapsed buildings can be traumatic and advises affected individuals to seek psychosocial support and counseling services available at health facilities or community networks.
“All Kenyans must remain vigilant during the ongoing MAM long rains and observe safety measures to reduce injuries and loss of life associated with collapsing structures. Public safety is a shared responsibility. Prompt reporting of hazards and adherence to safety guidelines can save lives,” the Ministry said.
