- His remarks come against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s declaration at State House Nairobi on January 26, 2025, where he chaired a UDA meeting.
Ugenya MP David Ochieng has dismissed speculation that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is the one pushing to lock in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He insists that the reverse could be true: ODM may be actively pursuing UDA as a stronger partner to secure its place in government.
“Political parties have no complications. What you see is what it is,” Ochieng said, recalling past elections where speculation clouded coalition talks.
“In 1998, there were endless questions about coalition building, the same in 2013. Even in the last elections, people doubted whether Uhuru would support Raila. We must learn from history.”
Ochieng argued that Kenyans deserve clarity on possible coalitions so they can make informed choices.

He emphasized the importance of registering alliances early with the Registrar of Political Parties, noting that timelines are fixed and partners must be locked in well ahead of the polls.
“If ODM wants to lock in UDA, that is perfectly legitimate. People assume it’s UDA chasing ODM, but it could be the other way around. Maybe ODM has realized that if they go with Wiper, they will flop. So they want to secure a partner that looks stronger and better. In my book, it’s ODM pursuing UDA—and there’s nothing wrong with that,” he said.
Ochieng added that ODM has long spoken about the role of political parties in forming governments, and now sees aligning with UDA as a practical step toward that goal. “It is a good thing to do,” he concluded.
His remarks come against the backdrop of President William Ruto’s declaration at State House Nairobi on January 26, 2025, where he chaired a UDA meeting. Ruto asserted that the UDA–ODM coalition must secure victory in the 2027 General Election by a margin of two to three million votes.
He expressed confidence that the alliance has the strength, strategy, and national appeal to deliver a decisive win.
