The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has formally condemned the filming of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medication at a pharmacy, calling it a grave breach of patient privacy and professional ethics.
While on a political tour, Gachagua, now the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader entered a local pharmacy to seek treatment. A footage of him buying and consuming medication was recored, then circulated widely on social media platforms including Facebook, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter).
The video has ignited a national debate on medical ethics and the sanctity of patient confidentiality.

“Recording any client within a pharmacy setting without consent constitutes a serious breach of privacy and healthcare confidentiality,” PSK stated unequivocally.
The Society reminded the public that pharmacies are not arenas for political spectacle or entertainment—they are sanctuaries of healing. Every Kenyan, regardless of status, deserves to seek care with dignity and discretion.
“Regardless of public profile or status, every Kenyan has the right to confidential healthcare,” PSK emphasized.
PSK President Dr. Wairimu Mbogo reinforced that pharmacy environments are regulated spaces built on trust. When a patient enters a pharmacy, they engage in a sensitive health transaction that demands confidentiality.
Recording such interactions without consent erodes that trust and sets a dangerous precedent. According to Kenya’s professional code of ethics, pharmacists and pharmaceutical technologists are duty-bound to protect patient confidentiality.
“Confidentiality in healthcare is not optional; it is a fundamental ethical and professional obligation,” Dr. Mbogo affirmed.
