• The clergy are vital pillars within our communities who deserve our utmost care, respect, and support. It is not enough to appreciate their work from afar; we must actively show them love, ensure they feel valued, and foster a true sense of belonging.

Throughout generations, the clergy has been seen as pillars of faith and spiritual guidance. They lead worship services, perform religious ceremonies such as weddings and baptisms, and provide moral guidance.

Often regarded as knowledgeable and experienced in the Bible and its teachings, many people look to them for support during life's challenges, decision-making, or when trying to grow their faith.

But have you ever wondered how safe clergy members are within their communities? What measures are in place to protect them, considering their critical and sometimes vulnerable roles?

A recent tragic incident involved the deaths of two priests, Fr. John Ndegwa Maina and Fr. Aloyse Cheruiyot Bett. The late Fr. John Ndegwa Maina, a Catholic priest from  Nyahururu Diocese, was laid to rest on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

His burial took place at the Tabor Hill Spiritual Center in Ol Joro Orok Constituency, Nyandarua County, following a funeral mass led by Bishop Joseph Mbatia of Nyahururu Diocese.

Fr. Ndegwa was found unconscious with visible injuries along the roadside in Kikopey, Gilgil, Nakuru County, on May 15. He later died in the hospital, and investigations into the matter are ongoing. The funeral was attended by clergy, parishioners, and dignitaries, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gashagua.

The late Fr. Aloyse Cheruiyot Bett, also a Catholic priest from Eldoret Diocese, was tragically killed on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the same day Fr. John Ndegwa Maina was being buried.

He was ambushed and shot dead by armed assailants in the volatile Keiyo Valley region of Elgeiyo Marakwet County while returning to his parish after visiting a small Christian community in Kabartile Village.
