By strengthening regional integration, the project is expected to boost trade and reduce travel times along one of Kenya’s busiest and most dangerous highways.
Launched in late 2025, the project carries a staggering price tag of KSh 184 billion (≈USD 1.2 billion), making it one of the largest road investments in Kenya’s history.
President William Ruto officially commissioned the project on November 28, 2025, at Kamandura in Kiambu County. He described the Rironi–Mau Summit Road as a “gateway to prosperity and transformation,” pledging that the upgraded dual carriageway will end persistent congestion, reduce accidents, and unlock trade potential along the corridor.
His administration has set a completion target of 2027, positioning the road as a cornerstone of Kenya’s infrastructural modernization.
