• The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Aden Duale has said that the response team is coordinating with the counties to contain the spread of the cholera outbreak.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has reported that as of April 6, 2025, a total of 97 cases of Cholera including 6 fatalities had been recorded in Nairobi, Kisumu and Migori.

The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Aden Duale has said that the response team is coordinating with the counties to contain the spread of the cholera outbreak.

“We have recorded a cholera outbreak in parts of the country. Our rapid response teams are on the ground, coordinating with counties to contain the spread,” Duale said.

In a press statement on April 8, 2025, the Ministry of Health says that it has prioritized the training and sensitization of healthcare workers nationwide. Other measures put in place to prevent the spread of the disease include enhance surveillance, risk communication and community engagement.

MOH notes that “Cholera is a highly infectious waterborne disease caused by a bacteria known as Vibrio cholera. The disease is contracted through consuming food or water contaminated with the bacteria.”

Symptoms include sudden onset of severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, muscle cramps, and severe dehydration, often appearing within 2 hours to 5 days after infection.

It is a serious disease that can lead to rapid dehydration and potentially death if left untreated.

To protect public health and prevent the spread of the disease, MOH has urged Kenyans to maintain personal hygiene, drink clean water, observe food safety and seek early medication.

CS Duale urges Kenyans to remain vigilant and act swiftly to protect lives. “I urge all Kenyans to observe strict hygiene and seek immediate care if symptoms appear. Let us remain vigilant and act swiftly to protect lives,” he said.
