The Kenyan Government is committed to achieving the WHO Maturity Level 3 status for the National Quality Control Laboratories. This will mean improvement of the quality, safety, and efficacy standards of health products and technologies, meeting global standards, enabling the Universal Health Coverage agenda.
Principal Secretary (PS) for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, while touring the National Quality Control Laboratories (NQCL) on January 14, 2025, committed the government's position to assess the existing challenges at the laboratory and finding sustainable solutions toward strengthening its capacity.
"Our efforts are focused on building a robust system that guarantees the quality, safety, and efficacy of health products for all Kenyans," she said.
The NQCL represents a keystone institution for healthcare in the country, offering high-quality products through medicines, vaccines, and other forms of medical tools. The granting of WHO Maturity Level 3 status provides new opportunities for the Laboratory's capacity in order to critically strengthen its function by assessing health product quality based on international standards toward better outcomes within public health.
Through the assurance of quality health products, the NQCL ensures protection of public health and assurance of access to all Kenyans to efficacious and quality medicines and health technologies. This aligns with the government's commitment to quality health care for all citizens, one of the pillars on the journey toward Universal Health Coverage.
The commitment by the Government of Kenya to achieve WHO Maturity Level 3 status for the NQCL is a leap forward in reinforcing the country's health system. This then means that with the attainment, Kenya will meet not only the international health standards but also remain committed to gradually attaining Universal Health Coverage with quality health products and services accessible by all Kenyans.
