On December 11, 2024, the first cohort of Kenyan workers embarking on a journey to Qatar was officially flagged off by Deputy President (DP) Kithure Kindiki and Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Labour and Social Protection, Dr. Alfred Mutua.

The event, held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), marks a significant milestone following a week of rigorous recruitment interviews conducted at both KICC and Kabete National Polytechnic. These interviews aimed to ensure that only the most qualified and prepared candidates secured these life-changing opportunities.

In his remarks, CS Alfred Mutua expressed profound gratitude for this transformative initiative. “I extend my gratitude to H.E. Dr William Ruto for setting the agenda to create sustainable employment opportunities for Kenyans locally and abroad. I also thank H.E. Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki for joining us today to celebrate this success,” he stated.

CS Mutua also acknowledged the support of H.E. Mohammed Mutair Al-Shamlani Al-Anzi, the Qatari Ambassador to Kenya, and all stakeholders who played a crucial role in making this initiative a reality.

During the ceremony, CS Mutua emphasized the concept of "brain gain over brain drain." He articulated that the Kenyans embarking on this new journey would not only enhance their own livelihoods and transform their families’ futures but would also return home equipped with valuable skills, knowledge, and international experience. “This experience will make them more competitive and contribute to Kenya’s national development,” he asserted.

Looking to the future, CS Mutua revealed that by the end of the week, a total of 300 Kenyan migrants would have departed for Qatar. “Today’s flag-off of 30 workers is only the beginning, with 100 more set to leave tomorrow and on Friday. Soon, I will be sharing information about 7000 technical job opportunities in Dubai for plumbers, electricians, and other skilled workers,” he added.
