The Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) under the United Society Against Fraud, Waste, and Abuse (USAWA) program engaged with Nakuru youths to commemorate international anti-corruption day.
Aligning with this year's theme "Uniting with the Youth against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity," the event was marked by performances by the youth, panel discussions and mentorship.
On behalf of AMWIK’s Executive Director Queenter Mbori, Programme Coordinator Lorna Sempele emphasized the pivotal role of young people in the fighting against corruption and their role in shaping a future characterized by integrity and accountability.
“For AMWIK, this day is important in reflecting our commitment on fostering transparency and integrity within our communities, as corruption undermines development, exacerbates inequality and erodes trusts in our institutions. Therefore, we aim to inspire new generation leaders to challenge corruption," she said.
According to the 2023 Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) report, on the status of corruption and unethical conduct in Kenya, health care sector was listed as second most corrupt ministries.
“Health as sector has suffered immensely due to corruption and mismanagement. Overall unemployment in Kenya is at 12.7percent. Youth (15-34 years old), who forms 65 percent of the Kenyan population, have the highest unemployment rate of 67 percent," she added.
USAID-USAWA is committed to improving health care in Kenya by enhancing transparency and fervently advocating for the enforcement of laws, policies, and regulations pertaining to the health sector.
Through the project, AMWIK and other organizations formed a consortium of partners rolling out the program led by Transparency International (Kenya) with Global Compact Network Kenya (GCNK) and the Inter Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK).
In order to raise knowledge of their rights as health care consumers and to promote the reporting of fraud, waste, and abuse, USAWA seeks to unite people, businesses, the media, and the community.
