Graduates from related areas like linguistics, computer science, marketing, systems management, Information technology and publishing benefit in a big way from this programme as their transition is easy.
With the emerging digital economy demanding skills and knowledge offered in mass communication training, the course demand is very high.
Gone are the days when journalism and mass communication graduates looked into the limited mainstream media for employment—the market place is now a thousand times bigger than it was decades ago.

The two-semester programme which will culminate with an attachment in the relevant industry has three specializations: print media, public relations and electronic media.
The print media strand will target those who plan to get into media as journalists in print, digital platforms and broadcast. The PR strand will target experts in public relations, corporate communication and strategic communication.
The electronic media will target professionals who have passion in matters technical media, media production, photography, photojournalism and videography among other aspects of multimedia production including graphic design.
The rolled-out programme will put a professional squarely in media and communication and give one legitimacy among the media trained professionals.
Speaking to Nax.today, Prof Henry Kiplangat, the Vice Chancellor Kabarak University, said, “in the 2022/2023 financial year, Kenya collected Ksh 5.3 billion in in revenue from digital economy. Digital media, including social media and all internet tools are all mass communication allied disciplines and platforms, which are a backbone of this vast economy.”
“This programme offers a competitive advantage to such learners who want to align themselves with the 21st century content creation, strategic communication, content production and information dissemination,” Prof Kiplangat said.
On the same, the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr Michael Ndonye said, “digital economy is estimated to be over US$ 12 trillion and is growing three times faster than the global economy. Therefore, any course that squarely places learners at the center of digital economy is highly valuable—that is the gist of this Postgraduate Diploma.”
“For students who are gifted in areas of mass communication and contemplating to change careers and disciplines, this is a course to pursue,” said Dr Ndonye.
Some of Kenya’s renowned journalists who went through similar programmes after graduating with degrees not related to journalism are Joe Ageyo (BSC Agribusiness management), Former KTN health reporter Dr Mercy Korir (Medicine, Neurosurgeon), Ken Mijungu (Law), Yvonne Okwara (BSC Microbiology), Waihiga Mwaura (Computer Science) and the list is long.
