•  The meeting was meant to review progress on urgent national concerns, including police brutality, church attacks, and violence against women and children.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused Inspector General (IG) of Police Douglas Kanja of failing to attend a scheduled meeting on February 16, 2026, meant to review urgent national concerns.

According to Gachagua, the agenda included police brutality, church attacks, and violence against women and children. He charged that the IG deliberately ignored violent incidents, particularly the ACK Witima Church attack on January 25, and suggested that such inaction shields perpetrators and normalizes impunity.

“The police service exists to serve the people of Kenya, not to intimidate them,” Gachagua declared.

Opposition Rally Disrupted

Later that day, united opposition leaders held a rally at Nyamakima in Nairobi’s CBD, drawing traders and citizens. The gathering was disrupted by gunfire and teargas. Gachagua condemned the use of live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators, warning that such actions risk plunging the country into anarchy.

Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the concerns, assuring Kenyans that the opposition would return to the IG’s office on February 20 or earlier to demand accountability and a formal report.

The unrest followed the death of 28‑year‑old Vincent in Kitengela on February 15, during the Linda Mwananchi tour led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Sifuna sent condolences to Vincent’s family and demanded justice, emphasizing that the opposition’s struggle is rooted in protecting citizens from violence.

Sifuna had convened the meeting after being ousted as ODM Secretary General, a decision halted by the courts on February 12, which reinstated him as the party’s legal Secretary General.

While the opposition demands accountability and justice, leaders stressed that the way forward must rest on dialogue and the rule of law to safeguard political expression as guaranteed by the Constitution.
