SHA Releases Ksh 11.1 Billion to Settle SHIF Claims

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced the release of Ksh 11.1 billion to settle approved claims under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

Through a statement by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, disbursements officially commenced on March 13, 2026, with payments processed in scheduled batches to ensure systematic and efficient transfers.

“This disbursement cycle will continue throughout the coming week and is projected to be fully concluded by Thursday, March 19, 2026,” SHA said in a statement.

The Authority reassured facilities that all successfully processed and approved claims will be settled within this period.

Facility administrators have been urged to allow the payment cycle to run its course.

“This is to allow sufficient time for the batch processing and standard inter-bank clearing procedures to take effect,” said the Authority.

SHA advised facilities to wait until March 19 before raising inquiries about pending funds.

“Should any facility not receive payment for their approved claims by the conclusion of this cycle, our dedicated support team will be readily available from Friday, March 20, 2026 to provide the necessary clarifications and assist with reconciliations,” noted the Authority.

This release comes amid heightened scrutiny of SHIF’s financial management. Health Cabinet Secretary (CS)Aden Duale recently clarified that while the government is releasing billions for genuine claims, approximately Ksh 11.6 billion in fraudulent claims were rejected by SHA’s digital systems.

The release of Ksh 11.1 billion is expected to provide a major boost to health providers, many of whom had threatened to suspend services due to mounting debts.
