Nakuru County transformed International Women’s Day 2026 from a symbolic celebration into a showcase of concrete action.
By unveiling Kenya’s first real‑time digital system to combat sexual and gender‑based violence (SGBV), the county positioned itself as a national pioneer, proving that equality is built on innovation, governance, and sustained investment.
The County Government notes that the Integrated Gender‑Based Violence Information System, launched on March 8, allows survivors to report abuse in real time, strengthening documentation, coordination, and response. Officials emphasized that the platform will speed up support services and ensure survivors are not lost in bureaucratic delays.
At the same time, Governor Susan Kihika’s administration is finalizing a comprehensive SGBV policy to reinforce legal frameworks, improve resource allocation, and enhance coordination among agencies.
The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Gender, Culture and Children Services Hanna Wendot Cheptumo praised Nakuru for leading with both policy and technology, calling the initiatives “critical in creating an enabling environment where women can thrive and advance professionally.”

Governor Kihika, through County Executive Committee Member Elga Riaga, underscored that empowerment must go beyond protection.
She announced Sh126 million for the 2025/2026 Women and Youth Economic Empowerment Programme, framing the funds not as handouts but as investments in entrepreneurs, innovators, and job creators. “Economic empowerment remains central to achieving true equality,” she said.
The celebrations, themed “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” also honored organizations advancing women’s empowerment, blending cultural performances with policy commitments.
Senior officials, including Principal Secretary (PS) for Gender and Affirmative Action Anne Wang’ombe, joined the event, reinforcing Nakuru’s message: women’s rights are advanced through deliberate systems, not ceremonial words.
Global Context
International Women’s Day 2026 marked 115 years of the global movement for gender equality. The UN’s theme highlighted dismantling structural barriers to justice, while the campaign theme “Give to Gain” emphasized that investing in women fuels prosperity and innovation.
Nakuru’s initiatives echoed these global priorities, aligning local action with international momentum.
