“At some point, I thought we had the freedom to give our opinions,” said John (not his real name).
“But when it comes to being listened to, I don’t think so. Honestly, I don’t think our leaders take anything from the citizens seriously,” he adds.
Others admitted they knew about participation channels—emails, messages, public forums, but dismissed them as symbolic.
Mike (not his real name) explained: “I know it usually happens, but I’ve never known who actually gets listened to. Nothing has ever happened. I’ve never seen anything requested by the youth get implemented. Even when the majority says something shouldn’t happen, it happens anyway.”
The Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi is emphasizing that Kenya’s 2026/27 budget will be inclusive and people-driven, urging citizens to actively submit proposals and participate in shaping allocations.
This carries hope for many. Yet countless citizens remain silent, convinced their cries fall on deaf ears.
Still, the path forward lies in civic education and renewed participation.
