In a tragic incident on April 2, 2024, along the Meru-Embu-Nairobi Highway, Meru Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali narrowly escaped death after his car was involved in a devastating road accident. Regrettably, his two children lost their lives in the incident. The accident occurred in the Riagacici area in Embu County.

The collision occurred when Ali's vehicle, a Subaru Forester with registration number KCX 290M, collided head-on with a double-cabin vehicle before erupting into flames.

The impact of the collision proved fatal for Ali's six-year-old and two year old daughters who tragically succumbed to their injuries.

According to a police report from the Embu West Sub-county Traffic office, the accident unfolded when a Toyota double cab, registered as KCZ 751R and driven by Patrick Gitonga, veered out of its proper lane.

Gitonga, aged 47, was driving from Embu General towards Meru when the collision occurred with Ali's Subaru Forester, driven by Michael Mwongera, a 35-year-old individual.

"At Riagacici area, it happened that one Patrick Gitonga, aged 47, was driving his M/V, reg. KCZ 751R Toyota double cab from Embu General direction towards Meru and, on reaching the location of the accident, left his proper lane, hitting a coming Subaru Forester KCX290M head-on, which was being driven by Michael Mwongera, 35 years old, "read part of the traffic police report.

The impact of the collision left Mwongera, the driver of the ill-fated car carrying the legislator and his family, injured. He has been admitted to Tenri Hospital for medical care. Tragically, Ali's two-year-old daughter also suffered severe internal stomach injuries and has been airlifted to Karen Hospital in Nairobi for specialized treatment.
