• Macky Sall had signed a decree in November 2023 for the elections to take place this year on February 25, but he significantly abolished the original date.

Senegal's presidential elections, initially slated for February 25, 2024, have been postponed due to a disagreement over the candidate roster.

On Saturday, February 3, 2024, President Macky Sall addressed the nation, explaining that he had revoked the electoral law due to the dispute.

Macky Sall had signed a decree in November 2023 for the elections to take place this year on February 25, but he significantly abolished the original date.

He assured the public that the elections would uphold freedom, transparency, and inclusivity principles, aiming for a peaceful and unified Senegal.

The postponement follows the exclusion of several prominent opposition figures from the candidate list by the constitutional council in January 2024.

These exclusions led to allegations of unfair application of candidacy rules, which authorities have denied. Among those barred from running are Karim Wade of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), currently in exile in Qatar due to accusations of dual citizenship, and Rose Wardini, who was detained on similar grounds.

President Sall has declared that he won't seek a third term, refuting claims that the delay serves his interests. This postponement departs from Senegal's history of peaceful and democratic elections.

With 20 initial candidates, uncertainty now looms over the nation regarding leadership and the scheduling of the elections.
