- The expansion answers the hospital’s growing workload, with rising numbers of mothers and newborns seeking care daily and straining existing infrastructure. It also reflects Governor Kihika’s vision to transform county hospitals into centers offering specialized services closer to communities.
A major investment in maternal, newborn, and specialized care is underway as Gilgil Sub County Hospital boosts its infrastructural capacity.
According to the County Government of Nakuru, under Governor Susan Kihika’s administration, and in partnership with the Mpesa Foundation, construction crews are raising a modern theatre and newborn care block designed to expand access to life‑saving services and cut down referrals.
“The one‑storeyed facility, a second wing to the new maternity block, will house a two‑operating‑table theatre on the ground floor and a Newborn Unit on the first floor, significantly enhancing surgical and neonatal care capacity,” the County Government announced.
The project, valued at Ksh. 50 million, is scheduled for completion within eight months. In the meantime, County Executive Committee Member for Health Roselyn Mungai has confirmed that the new maternity wing will be fully operational by February, ensuring continuity of essential services.

The expansion answers the hospital’s growing workload, with rising numbers of mothers and newborns seeking care daily and straining existing infrastructure. It also reflects Governor Kihika’s vision to transform county hospitals into centers offering specialized services closer to communities.
Alongside the construction works, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Roselyn Mungai visited health facilities across Gilgil Sub‑County, combining service monitoring with direct engagement with health teams and communities.
At Komothai Dispensary, she rallied Epuka Uchafu Afya Nyumbani teams to clear overgrowth within the compound and initiate kitchen gardening to improve the care environment. She also welcomed the rollout of Tiberbu, the facility’s electronic medical records system, noting its impact in easing workflow and reducing staff workload by shifting from manual to digital processes.
At Karunga Health Centre, Mungai received positive feedback from citizens on the quality of care. She commended the facility and sub‑county team for resolving earlier infrastructural challenges, while stressing the urgent need for a perimeter fence to protect services and infrastructure.

Her visit concluded at Gatundu Merironi Dispensary, a facility operationalized by Governor Kihika in collaboration with Hon. PM Njoroge, MCA for Murindat Ward, in August 2024. The dispensary continues to serve as a beacon of hope for the local community and recently received a fridge under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation—a game‑changer for children’s vaccination.
The Department of Health affirmed that such visits will continue as part of routine efforts to strengthen service delivery, enhance facility environments, and ensure systems function effectively for both patients and healthcare workers.
Once complete, the new block will mark a decisive step toward safer deliveries, improved newborn survival, and a stronger, more resilient health system for the community.
