• This was not just a crime against Albert. It was a crime against all young people in Kenya.

In a statement, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the killing of 31 year old influencer and blogger Albert Ojwang, who died under mysterious circumstances in Nairobi's Central Police Station.

“In the strongest terms possible, I condemn this cowardly act by the killers and call for speedy investigations. Culprits must be brought to book,” said Gachagua. “This was not just a crime against Albert. It was a crime against all young people in Kenya.”

The alleged murder of Albert Ojwang while in police custody has ignited a firestorm of public outrage across Kenya, with Gen Z activists and human rights defenders accusing the Ruto administration of running what they now call a "blood-based regime."

Ojwang, was reportedly arrested for posting critical remarks about Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Eliud Lagat, died under suspicious circumstances after being transferred from Homa Bay to Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

Authorities report that an officer found Ojwang in his cell with "blood oozing from his head," saying he had apparently struck his head against the cell wall and later died after being taken to hospital. The Deputy Inspector General, Eliud Lagat, who allegedly ordered Ojwang’s arrest, is now at the center of a growing national storm.

Gachagua has accused Deputy inspector general Lagat of undermining police leadership and personally operating Kamukunji and Central Police stations without the knowledge of the Inspector General.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has stepped up its investigation into the controversial death of Albert Ojwang. IPOA technical team led by Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan and Commissioner Dr. Micah Onyiego arrived at Central Police Station to conduct a fact-finding mission into the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death in custody.

Albert’s family and fellow Gen Z activists have expressed shock and grief, demanding answers and accountability. Crowds of protesters have assembled outside Nairobi’s City Mortuary (Nairobi Funeral Home) along Ngong Road, staging a standoff with anti riot police and demanding accountability in the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang.

In an official statement, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has suspended Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Duty Officer on the night of the incident, the Cell Sentry, and all officers present at the Report Office that night.
