President William Ruto has handed over 1,080 new social housing units to residents of the Mukuru kwa Njenga area of Nairobi.

This is part of a larger 13,248-unit development that includes: 5,616 studio units, 3,024 one-bedroom units, and 4,608 two-bedroom units.

The program has given priority to residents of Mukuru, Reuben, Riara, and Mariguini.

Studio units that were priced at Ksh 640,000 have been heavily subsidized to increase the affordability for low-income generating residents.

The monthly payments of Ksh 3,896 for eligible low-income earners (earning Ksh 20,000 and below), which include garbage collection, security, and hygiene services.

The Government caters for a 10% deposit for all qualifying applicants.

This particular project includes 98 modern housing blocks, which come with elevators, storm water drainage, ample parking, sewer systems, and refuse chutes.

This project aims to battle flood-related disasters, poor sanitation, and insecurity that are rampant in most slum areas.

President Ruto says this program will offer better sanitation, security and livelihoods to thousands of ordinary people who would never have had such a chance.

"And Mukuru is just the beginning. We have more than 200 such projects in various stages of completion across the country, employing more than 200,000 young people," said President Ruto.

The Mukuru Housing Project is just a part of the bigger national goal, whose aim is to deliver 200,000 affordable housing units annually.

Whether a studio apartment or a one-bedroom apartment, the units aim to provide shelter, restore dignity, and provide safety to residents.

Beneficiaries of this project are eagerly waiting to shift and live their long-awaited dream of moving from the slum areas to the high-rise apartments.

Construction of the affordable housing projects is not only in Nairobi City but across the entire country, with the sole purpose being to elevate the status of low-income generating Kenyans.

President William Ruto’s promise to the residents of Mukuru kwa Njenga is that the same amount of money they pay for rent in the slum areas, Ksh 3,000, will be the same amount they will pay monthly for the newly constructed housing units.
