At a time when institutions of higher learning are grappling with management challenges, Professor Henry Kiplangat, the VC Kabarak University, offers workable solutions in his latest book.

In a momentous event on September 30, 2023, at the Grand Winston Hotel, Nakuru County, Professor Henry Kiplangat unveiled his latest book, University Management Practices and Academic Staff Job Satisfaction.

The book launch was attended by dignitaries: Prof Ahmed Osman Warfa, Vice Chancellor, Garissa University, Professor and Vihiga County minister for Education, Science and Technical Vocational Training, Dr Ruth Agesa.

The Book launch Chief Guest, the Vice Chancellor of Laikipia University  Professor Joseph Kibet Rotich, discussed the urgent matters that Prof Kiplangat handles in the book.

“This book comes at a time when institutions of higher learning require better management for sustainability. Speaking out of experience, the new university funding model makes Professor Kiplangat’s book a compulsory read for all of us,” said Prof. Kibet.

The book explores the crucial role of effective management in fostering job satisfaction among academic staff, contributing to academic excellence and overall institutional success.

Professor Kiplangat is renowned for his astute leadership roles in top secondary schools nationwide and has gained significant recognition in university management practices.

Professor Joseph Kibet Rotich hailed Kiplangat as an outstanding manager.

“I know Professor Henry Kiplangat, not only as a fellow Vice Chancellor but as an exquisite manager, brilliant leader, and ardent educator—maybe you know him as something else, but at least our meeting today here converges our knowledge about him as a producer of knowledge; an author,” said Prof. Rotich.

His extensive experience and achievements have led to widespread publication of his research findings, particularly in high-impact journals, focusing on the correlation between university management practices and the job satisfaction of academic staff and allied areas.

The primary motive behind publishing the book is to disseminate valuable information to all stakeholders involved in the education sector.

Recognizing the significance of management for the success of any organization, he highlights the critical role that effective university management plays in producing human capital capable of driving progress across various sectors of the country.

“Management plays a pivotal role in the success of any organization, and universities are no exception. Effective management is critical for producing highly skilled individuals who can contribute to different sectors of the country,” said Professor Kiplangat.

During the launch, he told Nax Today that the culmination of rigorous research conducted within universities in the country influenced the writing of his book.

His focus was primarily on top leadership, as they serve as the driving force behind the mission and vision of institutions.

“Throughout my career, I have held various leadership positions, including leading top secondary schools in the country. These experiences have provided me with valuable insights and have propelled my extensive research in university management practices,” he said.

By examining management practices and their impact on staff job satisfaction, particularly among academic staff, Professor Kiplangat asserts that a contented workforce is more likely to wholeheartedly engage in institutional activities, take ownership, and strive for the highest productivity levels.

Consequently, academic quality can meet the stakeholders' expectations, including students, faculty, and the wider community.

Beyond this specific book, Professor Kiplangat has authored other publications that have brought him a profound sense of fulfilment as an author.

Reflecting on his work titled "Headteachers' Response to the Marketing Concept: Schools in England & Reflections on Kenya's Educational System", published in 2016, he emphasizes the critical role of headteachers in marketing their institutions.

The book underscores the significance of instilling confidence in the community, as a lack of trust can lead to declining enrolment and even the closure of schools.

However, by attracting more students and resources, institutions can enhance the quality of education, develop infrastructure, and ensure fair treatment of staff.

This, in turn, fosters a community of passionate educators who contribute to the institution's continuous improvement for the collective benefit of all.

When questioned about his choice of the Utafiti Foundation as the publisher for his works, Professor Kiplangat expressed his satisfaction with their professionalism and the exceptional quality of their previous collaboration.

He commends their commitment to accuracy and professionalism, encouraging other authors to consider working with the Utafiti Foundation.

“Regarding my choice of the Utafiti Foundation as the publisher for my works, they have consistently delivered exceptional results,” he said.

Looking ahead, Professor Kiplangat reveals that he has been encouraged by close friends and professionals to write his own story, sharing his experiences in transforming struggling institutions into premier establishments.

Recognizing the grace of God and his commitment to serving for the greater glory of God and humanity, he intends to focus on writing a book documenting the changes introduced in the education sector over the past five years.

This forthcoming publication examines the impact and significance of these changes within the education landscape, providing valuable insights and guidance for future development.

The Utafiti Foundation, responsible for publishing Professor Kiplangat's book, primarily focuses on research-related works. While they occasionally publish fiction, their main emphasis lies in disseminating research findings.

According to the Executive Director of Utafiti Foundation, Professor Mellitus Wanyama, Professor Kiplangat's book stands out among their publications due to its specific focus on university management practices, addressing a vital aspect that is particularly relevant to academic institutions.

Although the book primarily pertains to universities, it addresses broader management issues in primary schools and other enterprises.

This unique perspective distinguishes it from the foundation's previous publications on management issues.

“We have published several books on management issues, which have covered a wide range of management topics. However, Professor Kiplangat's book takes a different approach. It hones in specifically on university management practices, making it quite distinct from the others,” said Prof Wanyama.

Professor Henry Kiplangat's book launch marks another significant milestone in his illustrious career. Through his research and publications, he continues to contribute to improving educational institutions and advancing the education sector in Kenya.

His relentless dedication to effective management practices and academic excellence inspires future generations of leaders and writers to strive for positive educational change.
