  • President Biden thanked Kenya for accepting to lead the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to Haiti and expressed America's support for the mission. He also congratulated Kenya for successfully hosting the African Climate Summit.

US President Joe Biden phoned his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto following the United Nation's decision to grant Kenya the greenlight to deploy its police to Haiti.

In a statement by the White House, the phone call was made on Tuesday evening, October 3, 2023.

Confirming these statements, President Ruto said in a post on his X app account

“The relations between Kenya and United States are focused on the expansion of our shared prosperity. We are expediting the finalisation of a Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership (STIP) agreement, which will anchor increased trade, boost manufacturing, create jobs and spur investment between our nations. We are particularly keen on partnerships in infrastructure, renewable energy, green manufacturing and empowering Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), a key engine in our economic growth.

We will continue to engage on regional security, conflict resolution and the fight against terrorism to ensure the Horn of Africa has the room to focus on social and economic advancement.”

He further confirmed his phone call on the Haiti mission that is set to send Kenya police of close to 1000 in number to restore order in the country.

The Haitian crisis which has been spanning from 2018 to present has been characterized by political abyss and vicious gangs that has claimed many lives resulting from unrest.

Kenya deploying its police to the war-ravaged country has been faced with more criticisms than support from the political class and the countrymen at large citing lack of a tangible bilateral ties between the Haiti Government and the Kenyan Government.

The Kenyan military to be deployed are reportedly taking French lessons for communication with their counterparts while on a foreign mission.
