•  “As a typical Kenyan and Nairobian for that matter, I thought I knew all crimes but Johannesburg is fast proving to be the Shangri-la of all matters of crime. I recently discovered a new crime called “building hijacking,” If Landgrabbing is a degree, then building hijacking would be the master level.
  • So you build a highrise in a bustling area of town (i.e. Tom Mboya Street), criminal elements slowly take over the area (read Jozi CBD), you are forced to abandon your own building and they simply take it over, subdivide it to illegal immigrants and collect rent😅 wild things - X User.

A Kenyan on X has posted after claims of criminal activities connected with economic sabotage in South Africa’s Johannesburg has proven to be possible.

So how did this hijack incident start?

According to a report by Reuters, since the end of apartheid in 1994, the housing crisis in Johannesburg worsened as big businesses moved from the inner city to wealthy suburbs.

In the 1990s and 2000s, criminal syndicates began to "hijack" buildings that were left empty and rented out illegally.

Those blocks quickly became dilapidated centers of drug crime and other illegal activities.

Land grabbing has been on the rise in most cities for decades with efforts to solve proving futile.

Some claim the building hijacking scenario is a way to correct economic apartheid that is brought about by politicians who build story houses but later give them up due to criminal activities, but the same criminals take over and rent to other people for money, crazy right?

'Building hijacking' has been going on in Johannesburg for over 30 years as part of correcting 'Economic Apartheid.'

Kenyan politician the late Kuria Kanyingi acquired Oxford Place, a 4-storey hotel in Jozi in the 1990s, but 'Mr. Moneybags gave it up under 'Building hijacking'!

Most of the victims in the Johannesburg building fire are said to have been identified as homeless migrants. The blaze that ripped through a run-down apartment block in Johannesburg on Thursday has been labeled one of the deadliest fires in South Africa's history leaving more than 70 people dead, including a dozen children.

The five-story building — which is now gutted and blackened with soot — is said to be owned by municipal authorities, though they have not been able to provide a clear picture of who lived there because the building is believed to be one of many in Johannesburg that has been "hijacked" by criminal gangs.
