Political Behavior
Nakuru County’s politics reveal a striking pattern: the “one-term governor” cycle. Kinuthia Mbugua, elected in 2013, was voted out in 2017. His successor, Lee Kinyanjui, served one term before losing in 2022. Now Governor Susan Kihika faces pressure to break this trend and prove Nakuru can sustain leadership beyond one electoral cycle.
Elections in Nakuru are rarely straightforward. Ethnic competition, coalition alignments, and historical grievances shape them, making contests volatile and deeply charged. This dynamic highlights the paradox at Nakuru’s heart: a county of immense opportunity and growth, yet marked by political tension and social fault lines.
Economic Profile
Agriculture
- Nakuru’s prosperity is anchored in agriculture. Fertile lands and favorable climate support large-scale farming of maize, wheat, and horticultural produce.
- Livestock rearing, including cattle, sheep, and goats, provides food security and household income.
- Agriculture remains the backbone of the county’s economy, sustaining livelihoods and driving trade across the region.
Tourism
Tourism is a major contributor to Nakuru’s growth. The county hosts Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for flamingos and diverse wildlife, alongside Menengai Crater and other scenic attractions. These destinations attract both domestic and international visitors, supporting hospitality businesses and creating jobs in hotels, restaurants, and tour services.
Energy
Nakuru plays a vital role in Kenya’s energy sector. The Menengai geothermal project harnesses renewable energy to power homes and industries. This positions Nakuru as a key player in Kenya’s sustainable energy transition, while also attracting investment in infrastructure and technology.
Logistics and Trade
Strategically located along major transport corridors, Nakuru has become a hub for logistics and trade.
Its proximity to Nairobi and position on the Northern Corridor make it a vital link for goods moving between western Kenya and the capital.
Warehousing, trucking, and distribution services thrive here, reinforcing Nakuru’s role as a national powerhouse.
Challenges
Despite its dynamism, Nakuru faces persistent challenges:
Land conflicts rooted in historical grievances and competing claims.
Youth unemployment straining social stability as a growing population struggles to find opportunities.
Climate stress — droughts and unpredictable rainfall threaten agricultural productivity and heighten vulnerability.
As Nakuru moves forward under Governor Susan Kihika’s leadership, the county faces a defining test. Can it break the “one-term governor” curse and turn its economic dynamism into inclusive, sustainable progress? The outcome will shape Nakuru’s future and ripple across Kenya’s broader political and economic trajectory.
