Heaven’s Gate Prayer Centre in Nakuru was named to capture the sense of awe and divine encounter that worshippers experience there.
In Nakuru, faith is not just practiced—it is lived in places that have become spiritual landmarks for the community. These sanctuaries invite residents and visitors to retreat from the city’s bustle, carrying prayers, hopes, and burdens into spaces that promise silence and presence.
Nakuru has long been known as a city of highways, trade, and transition. Yet beneath its restless movement lies a quieter rhythm shaped by prayer and pilgrimage.
Across its landscapes, faith has carved out sacred spaces where believers withdraw to seek renewal, healing, and divine encounter. In this sense, Nakuru has steadily emerged as a center of sanctuary, drawing seekers from across Kenya and beyond.
Heaven’s Gate Prayer Centre

Along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway rises Heaven’s Gate Prayer Centre, a sanctuary that feels worlds away from the traffic rushing past.
Established in 2011 by Apostle William Kimani on five acres of land, the centre was envisioned as a Christian, non‑denominational retreat dedicated to prayer, fasting, and spiritual reflection.
Heaven’s Gate Prayer Centre in Nakuru was named to capture the sense of awe and divine encounter that worshippers experience there.
Often described as “a place where divinity meets humanity,” Heaven’s Gate draws its name from Genesis 28:17, capturing the awe worshippers feel upon arrival. Officially opened in 2014 after its first phase, it has grown into a sprawling retreat designed for both solitude and communal worship.
Prayer gardens offer quiet corners for meditation, while 30 prayer cells provide space for deep personal reflection. Three chapels, seating 100, 300, and 1,000 worshippers, accommodate gatherings of every scale.
A prayer tower rises as a symbol of devotion, complemented by four general meeting halls and pastoral offices that anchor daily activities.
Even its infrastructure reflects thoughtful stewardship. Boreholes supply water across the compound, including one that produces natural hot water—eliminating the need for boilers and blending sustainability with faith.
Unlike other prayer centres in Kenya, Heaven’s Gate combines the mountain retreat experience with accessible facilities close to Nakuru town. It has become a spiritual landmark for both locals and visitors, often compared to Subukia Shrine but with a more intimate, retreat‑style atmosphere.
Subukia Shrine

About 40 kilometres from Nakuru town, in the serene hills of Subukia, another sacred journey unfolds at the Subukia National Marian Shrine. Known as the Village of Mary, the shrine belongs to the Kenya Episcopal Conference and is entrusted to the Conventual Franciscan Friars.
It is a place of pilgrimage where faith is expressed through movement, prayer, and contemplation.
Pilgrims begin at the Grotto Chapel at the foot of the hill before ascending the Way of the Cross, a stone path built in 2011 that guides worshippers through Christ’s passion. Along the way stands a statue of Mary and her Son, carved from jacaranda wood from the Nairobi Nunciature garden—a quiet testament to devotion and artistry.
At the Spring Site, opened in December 2010, pilgrims pause to drink water and descend refreshed in body and spirit, often along the Way of the Rosary, meditating through its twenty stations amid sweeping views of the shrine and the Subukia landscape.
Unlike other prayer centres, Subukia Shrine is both a national religious symbol and a local retreat. It blends natural beauty with deep Catholic tradition, making Nakuru not just a civic hub but also a spiritual destination.
Together, Heaven’s Gate and Subukia Shrine reveal Nakuru not only as a geographical crossroads but also as a spiritual one—a place where faith finds space to breathe, and where prayer continues to shape the soul of the city.
