With‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ a global scope, the current United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Education Monitoring report made public reveals the total number of children and youths left out of education to be 272 million worldwide.

It is so enormous that it forces an individual to reconsider to what extent the barriers that have been preventing education for a long time have been surpassed.

The report describes those barriers relating to poverty, living in a remote area, early marriage or pregnancy, and the prevalence of gender stereotypes in society.

The situation of gender discrimination can be seen everywhere; however, apart from just promoting the concept of gender equality through advocacy, the Kenyan government is actively practicing it as well.

Among the strongest proofs of this commitment are tiny, domestic, and focused problem-solving methods like the Kiharu Masomo Bora 2025 project that was launched in Murang'a County.

The program's goal is to prioritize education over other social changes and, thus, make it the most powerful change agent.

During the launching of the project, Purity Ngina, the CEO of National Gender and Equality Commission, noted that, "Education is not just an instrument; rather, it is the link that goes from skills to opportunities."

"It is the only way to shatter the very long-lasting poverty cycles and, at the same time, it offers the doors of fair chances to all without distinction," she added.

The 43rd session of UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from October 30 to November 13, 2025, was primarily devoted to this well-thought-out approach .

The event was co-hosted by the Government of Uzbekistan under the theme “Promoting gender equality through multilateral collaboration” .

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, was very clear about gender equality progress as well as the remaining works when she talked about the future.

"Our report serves as a record of our joint achievements in the promotion of gender equality. We still have a very long way to go, but we know our destination, and we have already paved the way," she said.

If Kenya decides to incorporate these community-based models into national policy frameworks such as the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) formally, then it will be able to fulfill her commitments under Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Thereby, the establishment of subsidized education and post-school empowerment will not only be official and accessible to all children and youth in the country but also be a vehicle for equitable ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌outcomes.
