In higher learning institutions, students are increasingly encouraged to embrace Artificial Intelligence, particularly for refining assignments. Likewise, lecturers are urged to adopt these tools to alleviate the assessment burden on both educators and learners alike.
Speaking during a recent episode of the TalkChat Podcast, political analyst Dr. Michael Ndonye, who also serves as the acting Dean of the School of Music and Media at Kabarak University, challenged universities and the Commission of University Education (CUE) to integrate AI actively.
He has stressed the need to explore alternatives to traditional dissertations and theses as assessment methods in higher education.
“They are already irrelevant,” he noted, “because today’s students can write theses and dissertations using AI within hours.”
Dr. Ndonye asserted that resisting the integration of Artificial Intelligence in learning does more harm than good; while embracing it offers a future that simplifies learning even further.
“Should we continue resisting the use of AI, or should we evolve?” he posed.
Dr. Michael Ndonye has emphasized the urgent need for AI literacy in education, stating, “We must teach our students how to generate theses using AI. It is essential to examine our students' ability to utilize AI in both their learning and our teaching.”
He has highlighted that AI literacy should facilitate AI-assisted learning and academic writing. “By embracing this approach, we can develop innovative assessment methods that align with the AI era, ensuring our evaluations are compliant with these advancements.”
As Dr. Ndonye advises, Kabarak University is leading the way in this vital transformation, preparing students for a future where technology and education go hand in hand.
