Cultural integration is a key part in the improvement of social connection and education in general, an endeavor that Kabarak University holds to very high standards as emphasized by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration and Finance, Prof. Chepkilot.
On February 11, 2025, Kabarak University in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at Egerton University hosted the Chinese Spring Festival. The festival, celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese Calendar.
It is of cultural significance to the Chinese people and interestingly, does not occur on a fixed date as a regular New Year’s Eve rather it changes following the moon’s orbit. The festival is like no other and is accompanied by dance, music, lights, colors, costumes and elaborate parades. And so, it was a great fete to see Kabarak University immerse itself in such cultural splendor.
In attendance were the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration and Finance, Prof. Ronald Chepkilot, who spoke on behalf of Vice Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat, other members of the University Management Board (UMB), the Acting University Chaplain, the Director of Nakuru City Campus, staff, and students from both Kabarak and Egerton University, and of course, the event’s special guest, Prof. Liu Yutao, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Egerton University (CIEU).

Such initiatives play a key role in bridging the cultural gap between nations opening young minds to the numerous customs, traditions, lifestyles as well as alternative possibilities to the way they could lead their lives. And what better way to learn this than through first-hand experience. The event, held at the University’s auditorium, saw thrilling performances, captivating exhibitions and heartfelt speeches form both collaborators as to the importance of such a momentous occasion.
It is with sincere hope that this will begin a pattern or tradition of sorts. One that ensures mutual immersion and exchange of culture and knowledge globally. There is so much cultural terrain that is yet to be explored and a step in the right direction is what is needed.
Kabarak University has been known for being a front-runner when it comes to innovation and invention and an event such as this really cements that narrative. Hopefully, this will open up global channels of communication that initiate critical, thought-provoking conversations surrounding culture, beliefs, religion, and tackle pressing issues such as stereotypes and ethnocentrism.
Knowledge is power, and that rings true more so now in a world that thrives on information. An initiative like this is what makes Kabarak University one of the top learning institutions in the country.
