On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki visited the East African Kidney Institute (EAKI), located next to the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi. According to DP Kindiki, as construction nears completion and major medical machinery installed, the facility is expected to be commissioned at the end of March 2025.
“The East African Kidney Institute (EAKI) is 99% complete including the procurement of equipment,” Kindiki said.
EAKI has been set up to address the increased burden of kidney failure in Kenya and throughout the East African region where most patients encounter expensive and unavailable treatment options. For a significant amount of time, members of the society who required kidney dialysis or transplants were unable to do so and had to bear the costs and stress of going overseas for treatment.
“The prevalence of kidney related illnesses and the high costs of kidney dialysis and transplants have necessitated the construction of a specialised medical facility for kidney treatment,” he added.
The construction and opening of this facility is geared to give the opportunity to those people who need payment sufficient to receive quality treatment.
“Once fully operational, EAKI will provide accessible and high-quality kidney care, significantly reducing the financial and logistical strain of seeking transplants abroad. This milestone reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing specialized healthcare services for all Kenyans,” the Ministry of Health said.
