On Sunday May 17, 2026, the matatu operators announced that they would down their tools from midnight over the fuel price increase. According to transport associations said the fuel price increase had made operations unsustainable.
In a presser released on Sunday the National Police Service (NPS), confirmed that they noted reports of the planned matatu strike. They assured Kenyans of their safety and security. They added that any disruptive conduct will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.
“The public is urged to remain calm, continue with their daily activities, and cooperate with law enforcement officers. For assistance, citizens are encouraged to use toll-free communication numbers 999 and 911.’’ reads a part of the NPS presser.
