Kenya has entered a new era of road safety enforcement. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has activated the Instant Fines Traffic Management System, a fully automated platform designed to monitor, detect, and penalize traffic violations in real time.

How the System Works

NTSA has deployed 1,000 smart cameras across major roads—700 fixed and 300 mobile units. These cameras use artificial intelligence (AI) to capture evidence instantly and identify offenses such as overspeeding, failing to wear seatbelts, driving on pavements, and using mobile phones while driving.

Once a violation occurs, the system automatically sends an SMS notification to the registered vehicle owner. The message details the offense, the location, and the fine amount. Motorists then have seven days to pay the penalty.

Payment and Penalties

All fines must be settled through the KCB Group branch network. If a motorist fails to pay within the seven‑day window, the fine begins to accrue interest.

“Failure to settle the fine due within the 7-day period will result in the amount due earning interest. In addition, the vehicle or the driver with pending fine will not be able to to transact on NTSA service platforms until the fine is settled,” says NTSA through a statement.

By removing human intervention from traffic enforcement, NTSA aims to eliminate corruption and bribery, long associated with manual policing. The system promises greater transparency, efficiency, and accountability, ensuring that penalties are applied fairly and consistently.

This initiative forms part of NTSA’s wider campaign to reduce road accidents and reckless driving. Authorities believe that automated enforcement will not only deter violations but also strengthen public trust in traffic regulation.
