• Gachagua has urged the government to take immediate measures to support affected communities and invest in long-term solutions to address recurring droughts.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticised the government over what he describes as continued neglect of the North Eastern region, saying communities in the area are facing severe hardship due to prolonged drought and delayed government intervention.

Speaking during a public address on February 10, 2026, Gachagua said families in North Eastern Kenya are struggling to access food and water, with the situation worsened by the loss of livestock and limited support from the state.

He noted that the humanitarian crisis has left many households vulnerable, particularly women and children.

Emphasising the human cost of the crisis, Gachagua said, “No parent should watch their child sleep hungry,” as he called for urgent action to address food insecurity in the region.

He faulted the government for failing to prioritise the needs of North Eastern Kenya, arguing that the region has remained marginalised despite repeated pledges to improve living conditions.

Gachagua has urged the government to take immediate measures to support affected communities and invest in long-term solutions to address recurring droughts.

His remarks come amid growing concern over the government’s response to drought and humanitarian challenges affecting parts of the country.
