• Farmers have been urged to present their animals for vaccination and to cooperate fully with veterinary teams operating in their areas.

Nakuru County Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services has rolled out a countywide Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme, using an e-voucher system to make the service more accessible and affordable for farmers.

The vaccination cost has been subsidized to Sh 50 per animal, a move aimed at protecting livestock while reducing the financial burden on farmers.

The programe targets cattle in all wards, with trained veterinary officers administering approved vaccines to safeguard animal health.

Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly contagious viral infection that poses a serious threat to livestock productivity and farmers’ livelihoods, making timely vaccination critical.

According to the County Government of Nakuru, "the adoption of the e-voucher system is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in service delivery, while the subsidy underscores the county government’s commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening the livestock sector."

The vaccination programme aims to prevent the spread of FMD, improve animal health and productivity, reduce economic losses, and bolster food security and household incomes across the county.

Farmers have been urged to present their animals for vaccination and to cooperate fully with veterinary teams operating in their areas.

Speaking during the programme rollout in Nyota Ward, Kuresoi North Sub-County, Agriculture CECM Leonard Bor said the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the National Government under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP).

He added that the programme will create employment opportunities for more than 100 young people drawn from across the county and targets the vaccination of over 200,000 cattle.

The county government has emphasized that successful implementation will not only protect livestock but also enhance livelihoods, secure food supplies, and support the broader agricultural economy.

Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the programme and ensure their cattle are vaccinated promptly.
