He says congregants and leaders were marooned in the sanctuary while vehicles outside burned. “We ask Kenyans to pray for us to come out alive,” Gachagua pleaded.
Through a post on X, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the attack.
“I strongly condemn the violent assault at Wairima ACK Church in Othaya, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his team, together with unarmed leaders and civilians, are trapped inside a place of worship as live bullets and tear gas are deployed and vehicles torched outside,” he declared.
Kalonzo stressed that the incident represents a grave violation of the Constitution and the rule of law. He underscored that a church is a sacred and protected space, and the use of force against unarmed citizens in such circumstances is unlawful and indefensible.

“I hold the Inspector General of Police and all those responsible fully accountable for the safety of @rigathi, his team, and all civilians inside the church. No political ambition or rivalry can ever justify terrorising citizens or attacking a place of worship,” Kalonzo asserted.
The incident has raised alarm over rising political tensions and the state of security enforcement.
