- The upgrade is expected to lower patient costs while cutting turnaround times for results. The fully automated haematology system alone will be capable of processing more than 1,200 tests per hour, a major boost to efficiency.
Residents of Nakuru County and its environs are set to benefit from faster and more affordable medical tests following the installation of advanced diagnostic equipment at the Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH).
The County Government of Nakuru notes that the new machines, an Atellica Solution diagnostic system and a Haematology analyzer were supplied and installed by medical technology firm Elsmed. Once operational, they are expected to significantly expand the hospital’s capacity to conduct specialized laboratory tests, reducing reliance on private labs or facilities in Nairobi.
“Once commissioned, the hospital will be able to offer specialized diagnostic services not only to patients at NCRTH but also to other health facilities within Nakuru County and the wider region,” the County Government notes.
The Atellica Solution system will support comprehensive testing for liver and kidney function, cardiac markers, tumour markers, and other specialized investigations. The Haematology machine will enhance diagnosis of blood-related conditions such as anaemia, leukaemia, and other disorders.

During a visit to the hospital laboratory on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the County Executive Committee Member for Health (CECM) Roselyn Mungai urged the supplier to fast-track installation and staff training.

Engineers confirmed that installation is scheduled for completion by February 2, 2026, after which laboratory personnel will undergo comprehensive training to ensure sustainability and optimal use.
County Medical Laboratory Coordinator Ramadhan Musa said the new equipment would transform services at NCRTH.
The installation is part of the county government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce referrals outside the county, and position NCRTH as a regional centre of excellence for specialized medical services.
