• World Sight Day began in 2000, launched under the VISION 2020 initiative by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Take a break from that screen. Yes, I’m talking to you, the one scrolling endlessly, chasing updates, and working long hours under fluorescent lights. You might think you're being productive, but have you considered what this constant screen time is doing to your eyesight?

Today, October 9, 2025, we mark World Sight Day 2025, and this year’s theme says it all: “Love Your Eyes.” This is not just a slogan, but reminder to prioritize eye health, raise awareness about preventable vision loss, and push for equal access to eye care.

World Sight Day began in 2000, launched under the VISION 2020 initiative by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Back then, over 180 million people were living with vision impairment, many of them could have been helped with early treatment or better access to care. That number has only grown.

Here in Kenya, and around the world, office workers spend hours glued to screens. That’s not just exhausting; it’s damaging. But instead of telling people to avoid screens altogether, this year we’re shifting the conversation to screen resilience. We can protect our vision without sacrificing productivity.

So how do we do that? Let me show you:

1. Micro Eye Exercises

Roll your eyes (literally) and flex them gently. These movements stretch and relax the six muscles that control your eyes.

Try palming — cup your hands over closed eyes for two minutes. It’s a simple way to reduce tension and refresh your vision.

 2. Workspace Ergonomics

Keep your screen 20–28 inches from your eyes, with the center of the screen 4–5 inches below eye level.

Use a document holder to avoid constant shifting between paper and screen.

3. Natural Light Boost

Offices with natural light report up to 84% less eye strain, headaches, and blurry vision, according to Cornell University.

You should avoid placing screens directly in front of windows or white walls, glare is your enemy.

4. The 20-20-20 Rule

Take a break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away. It’s like a mini vacation for your eyes.

5. Hydration and Blinking

Dry office air and screen focus reduce blinking. So blink more — consciously — and drink water to keep your eyes hydrated and comfortable.

World Sight Day isn’t just about eye exams and awareness posters. It’s about taking action — right at your desk. So today, I challenge you to love your eyes. Build habits that protect your vision. Because your eyes aren’t just tools for work, they’re windows to your world.

Now, stop scrolling. Look up. Blink. Breathe. And remember: your sight deserves your attention.
