Kenya’s Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, in a meeting held on July 18, 2024 at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Nairobi has spoken regarding the ongoing nationwide protests. He has recommended His Excellency the President for responding to the people's demands, particularly the Gen Zs.
In his speech, he pointed out a few of those demands that have been affected namely the sacking of the entire Cabinet, signing the IEBC bill, reducing the financial budgets of some offices, and doing away with the Finance Bill 2024 among others.
He has highlighted that harmony and understanding of the current situation can only be attained through dialogue. Additionally, he has remorsefully condoled with the families that lost their loved ones during the protests. Moreover, he has registered his worry that some goons hijacked the peaceful demonstration and caused property destruction, looted, and damaged various businesses which he has strongly rebuked and apologized to those affected.
Further, he has announced that the country has lost 6 million shillings as per the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) report due to the protests, and the continuity of the demonstrations will lead to the loss of jobs and youths will be the most affected thus making a rallying call for a dialogue.
He requests that the dialogue commences at the home level with parents taking up the mantle to speak to their children and collectively save the country from destruction. He has called upon the youths to accept dialogue and recommended the President for his bold step to get into the X space and engage in a meaningful conversation with the public in response to their questions which is a rare act.
