Kenya kicked off its CHAN 2024 journey in style on Sunday, August 3, 2025 with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The victory that saw Austin Odhiambo score the winning goal ignited nationwide celebrations and high praises from both political leaders and football enthusiasts.

Leading the chorus of congratulatory messages was President William Ruto, who applauded the team's spirited display.

“We salute Harambee Stars for an outstanding and entertaining display of talent. Your victory today against the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the beginning of what promises to be a historic chapter in Kenyan football,” he said.

“Thank you, Austin Odhiambo, for sealing the win. We are living up to the rallying cry Stars Must Win. We are behind you all the way,” Ruto concluded.

The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, also joined in celebrating the win, sharing a passionate tribute to both the team and Kenyan fans.

“Game well played, our pride, Harambee Stars! You have made Kenya proud with a sterling performance and a strong start to the tournament. Let’s keep the momentum and deliver that ultimate win!”

He further applauded the fans for their overwhelming support and unity throughout the match.

“To all Kenyans Mumecheza kama nyinyi! The electrifying energy, thunderous cheer, and unity in a fully packed stadium were the perfect recipe for today’s victory,” he said at the end.

Moreover, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka joined the chorus of congratulations, describing the win as a historic moment for the country and commending both individual brilliance and collective effort.

He praised match-winner Austin Odhiambo, team captain Aboud Omar, head coach Benni McCarthy, and the entire squad for their impressive performance.

 “What a historic victory harambee stars. Austin Odhiambo, your name is clearly written in the stars. Well done skipper Aboud Omar, coach Benni McCarthy and the entire team,” he said.

Now, the team shifts focus to the upcoming matches, working diligently toward President Ruto’s ambitious promise to reward their success.

The president had earlier promised to generously gift the players, with Ksh 1 million for every match won and Ksh 500,000 for every draw. Should the team reach the quarterfinals, they will be awarded Ksh 60 million, Ksh 70 million for advancing to the semifinals, and Ksh 600 million if they go on to lift the CHAN 2024 trophy.
