Law Society of Kenya (LSK) is a community, where the members are brought together by a common cause and driven by a common philosophy. The society operates with its eye set on maintaining and promoting the rule of law throughout the country, a role that demands advocacy and good governance.

Being a fraternity, lawyers who constitute it are undoubtedly key, therefore, the loss or gain of one propels significant impact, and either occasions need to be acknowledged and respected.

The society has recently been brought together in mourning following the shooting of Magistrate Monica Kivuti.

The incident took course on the afternoon of June 13, 2024, when she delivered a ruling which seemed unsatisfactory in Samson Kipchirchir’s conscious, who proceeded to shoot Kivuti, inflicting life-threatening injuries that later claimed her life.

The Judiciary, led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, has expressed its sorrow over the unfortunate and unjust ordeal that snatched a crucial piece of it. The slain magistrate was termed a gallant officer who always upheld the law doctrine with high regard.

“The Judiciary continues to mourn the loss of our dear colleague, Hon Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate. The entire institution, including Judges, Judicial officers, and Judicial Staff, feels profound sorrow over this unjustified killing. Hon. Kivuti was murdered while serving the nation, an act that strikes at the heart of judicial independence and the rule of law, fundamental values enshrined in our Constitution,” she wrote on X.

Kivuti’s demise has also pointed a spotlight at the security gap in court premises, with judicial duties being performed in makeshift structures which expose judges, judicial officers, judiciary staff, and court users to similar threats.

The community has also set aside Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in solidarity to mourn Hon. Monica Kivuti, a function that calls upon lawyers to adorn a purple ribbon in honor of the slain magistrate.

“The Law Society of Kenya calls upon all members across the 8 branches to join us in honoring the life of the late Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate-Makadara Law Courts starting on Tuesday, 8 June 2024, members are expected to adorn the purple ribbons during the week,” LSK stated through a notice on X.
