Sorrow has engulfed the family of Mr Ogweno after their 8-year-old son was hit by a speeding vehicle along Kendu Bay - Homa Bay road on Friday, May 17, 2024.

The boy met the accident as he was returning home from Achuth Primary School in Adiedo and was rushed to Kendu Bay Hospital and later referred to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment, where their kin died that evening.

George Ogembo, father to the kin, recalls how that fateful evening tore him apart from his kinsmen after they attempted to conduct a burial ceremony for his son three days later.

"My brother and uncle came to my house on Sunday to discuss the proceedings of my son's farewell, they had planned the burial ceremony without my knowledge," Mr Ogweno said.

Despite the family's unstable income, the move to bury their kin without their permission did not feel right to them; hence, they declined the offer, which tore them further apart from their kinsmen.

"The bad blood between my family and I has now widened because my wife and I refused the offer from the family because I was not informed of any funeral arrangements despite the victim being my son," said Mr Ogweno.

Mr Ogweno also added that a more significant part of the hospital bill had been paid by the teachers from Achuth Primary, which enabled their son to get treatment before he died.

Mr Ogweno and his wife, Caroline Akinyi, have now been left with the burden of catering for their kin's burial since they have been cut off from the clan.

"My in laws have cut me off, they have vowed not to help me with any burial expenses because my husband and I denounced their help even though we needed their help," said Mr Ogweno's wife.

The bereaved family is now asking for help from well-wishers to help them bury their kin who is stuck at the morgue.

"My husband and I have no money, therefore we plead for assistance from anyone who can help us burry our son, the family will not provide any assistance because we declined their help," said Akinyi.

Their 8-year-old boy is still awaiting post-mortem at the Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital as the parents seek money for the process to begin.
