Roads, Transport, and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has addressed the state of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport, and Wilson Airport.

In response to an interim report by a technical committee, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted critical recommendations to enhance these airports' infrastructure and services.

The proposed improvements are crucial for positioning Kenya as a leading aviation hub and ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)

The recommendations for JKIA encompass several essential upgrades:

1. Erection of Canopies: Critical walkways at JKIA will be equipped with canopies to shelter passengers in adverse weather conditions.

2. New Roof Installation: The entire terminal building 1B, 1C, and 1D will receive a new roof with provisions for rain harvesting, solar panels, and other necessary services.

3. Internal Spaces Reorganization: Internal spaces will be reorganized to optimize passenger processing, improve ventilation and lighting, and ensure adequate sanitary facilities.

4. Standby Generators: Immediate commissioning of standby generators will provide primary backup power, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

5. Secondary Backup Generator: Additional backup generators will be installed at Terminals 1A, 1E, and 2 to enhance reliability.

6. Screening Equipment Replacement: Defective screening equipment in the baggage handling system will be replaced with advanced 3D technology, enhancing security and efficiency.

Moi International Airport

The recommended improvements for Moi International Airport include:

1. Road Rehabilitation: Road surfacing, drainage, road markings, and kerbs will undergo rehabilitation, enhancing accessibility and safety.

2. Canopies at Departure and Arrivals: Canopies will be erected at departure and arrival areas to protect passengers from inclement weather.

3. Primary Screening Yard (PSY): A dedicated screening yard with modern facilities and canopies will streamline security processes.

4. Airside Slope Management: Proper slope management will be implemented to protect the runway from potential sinkhole formation.

5. Underground Cable Replacement: Old underground cables with numerous joints will be replaced to ensure reliability.

6. Faulty Backup Generator Replacement: The faulty backup generator will be replaced, guaranteeing an uninterrupted power supply.

7. Screening Equipment Upgrade: Outdated screening equipment will be replaced with state-of-the-art 3D technology, enhancing security measures.

Wilson Airport

The proposed enhancements for Wilson Airport include:

1. Canopy Installation: A canopy will be constructed in the luggage handling area to protect passengers and their luggage from adverse weather conditions.

2. Drop-off and Pick-up Points: Dedicated drop-off and pick-up points will be established at the terminal building, improving convenience for passengers.

3. Primary Screening: A primary screening area will be implemented, ensuring stringent security measures for passengers.

4. Drainage Facilities: Proper drainage facilities will be installed within the runway and aprons to prevent water accumulation and ensure safe operations.

5. Runway Recarpeting: The runway, plagued by severe potholes, will undergo recarpeting to enhance its surface condition and ensure smooth landings and takeoffs.
