The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced a new revised pump price. This was as a result of Kenyans uproar and planned protest. The protest witnessed on Monday, May 18, 2026, in major cities in Kenya, alongside the strike by matatu operators and other transport stakeholders, prompted fresh engagements between the government and the transport sector.
New Pump Price
According to EPRA, the applicable pump price per litre in Nairobi for diesel decreases by Ksh. 10.06 per litre. The price of kerosene increases by Kshs. 38.60 per litre. The price for a super petrol remains unchanged.
‘’We have recalculated the maximum retail pump price that will be in force from 19th May 2026 to 14th June 2026 following a petition by public transport sector operators on the need to minimise the risk of motor fuel adulteration that may arise due to the big price differential between Diesel and Kerosene,’’ reads part of the statement released by EPRA.
"In Nairobi, Super Petrol retails at Kshs. 214.25 per litre. Diesel now retails at Kshs. 232.86 per litre. Kerosene costs 191.38 per litre. These prices are effective from midnight for the next 30 days."
Impact of Fuel Price Increase
Earlier, on May 15th 2026, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(KNCCI) released a presser on fuel prices. According to KNNCI, the sharp rise in diesel is concerning because diesel is the backbone of transport, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and general trade.
The Chamber says any increase in diesel prices feeds into the cost of moving goods, producing essential commodities and delivering services across the country. It recommends that the government urgently adopt practical cushioning measures, such as fuel taxation and stabilisation of fuel, among others.
Stance Of Transport Sector
The
Chairperson of the Association of Matatu Transport Owners, Kushian Muchiri, asked drivers and owners of the vehicles to continue keeping their vehicles at home. This was after the Association met with government officials led by the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi.
He cautioned to drivers not to engage in disruption or rioting as they wait for better engagements, which will save the economy.
