Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has mounted a spirited defense of the United Alternative Government’s support for former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Raphael Tuju, condemning police brutality and insisting Tuju’s treatment was unconstitutional and inhumane.

On March 24, 2026, Kalonzo, while addressing the press, said that his decision to accompany Tuju to the police station, stand with him in court, and visit him in hospital was an act of basic decency and legal duty. He dismissed critics who accused him of political opportunism.

“Those who call that scavenging clearly misunderstand both leadership and the Constitution. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 is not negotiable, and neither is the dignity of every Kenyan citizen,” Kalonzo said.

Kalonzo acknowledged being branded a “mascavenger” by President William Ruto and reclaimed the term, declaring that if defending constitutional justice amounts to scavenging, he accepts it proudly. He emphasized that Tuju is not a terrorist and warned against normalizing abductions and unlawful treatment of citizens.

“The way he was handled yesterday in our presence was nothing short of a terrorist attack on a Kenyan whose rights are well established,” he charged.

Kalonzo urged Ruto to demonstrate genuine friendship by ensuring Tuju receives humane treatment.

“We urge Honorable Ruto to come forward and be a true friend. What is most important here is that Tuju should be helped. If he removes the police, it will be one sign of showing friendship, because Tuju is a man under arrest, but we are going to fight for his rights,” he added.

Ruto’s Counterpoint

Speaking in Nyanza on the same day, President William Ruto argued that Tuju needs genuine friends who offer honest advice and real support, not opportunists exploiting his misfortunes for political gain.

Ruto accused some leaders of being “scavengers” seeking popularity from Tuju’s struggles instead of helping him recover. He stressed that Tuju should be surrounded by true allies who can safeguard his health and wealth so he can move forward.

Tuju’s Ordeal

Tuju remains hospitalized at The Karen Hospital under police guard following a dramatic disappearance and arrest.

On March 21, 2026, Tuju and his driver were reported missing after his vehicle was found abandoned in Karen.

On March 23, 2026, Tuju resurfaced at his home, claiming he had been in hiding after being trailed by unmarked vehicles. He was immediately arrested by DCI officers.

Mohamed Amin, the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) accused Tuju of staging his own abduction to gain public sympathy amid legal battles over a KSh 1.9 billion bank loan.

While held at Karen Police Station, Tuju’s health deteriorated. His lawyers alleged police manhandled him, aggravating injuries from a 2020 road accident.

After a standoff between doctors and police, Tuju was admitted to The Karen Hospital ICU with severe pain and unstable blood sugar levels.
