- “Effective immediately, media enterprises are hereby advised to engage duly registered persons as recognized by KNDI on matters nutrition and dietetics,” the advisory stated.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has issued a stern directive to all media enterprises, requiring mandatory verification of nutrition and dietetics experts before they are engaged to provide public health information.
The advisory, released Friday, February 6, 2026 follows concerns raised by the Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI) over unregistered individuals being presented as professionals in the field.

A recent incident involving Spice FM (Standard Group) sparked the move, after the station aired a segment titled “Ugali is the most useless food that is out there” by a purported “Nutrition Expert” named Issa Habib.
KNDI has since condemned and disowned the remarks, stressing that the individual was not a registered professional.
“Effective immediately, media enterprises are hereby advised to engage duly registered persons as recognized by KNDI on matters nutrition and dietetics,” the advisory stated.
The Institute, established under Cap 253B of Kenyan law, is mandated by Parliament to regulate standards and ensure quality in nutrition and dietetics.
It warned that engaging non-registered persons violates Sections 33 and 36(b) of the Nutritionists and Dieticians Act, exposing both the individuals and media houses to potential litigation.
MCK emphasized that media organizations must exercise due diligence by consulting KNDI to confirm the qualifications of any guest or commentator on nutrition-related topics.
The Council urged outlets to use official channels for verification to safeguard the public from misleading or harmful health information.
The advisory underscores the growing concern over misinformation in health reporting and reinforces the responsibility of media enterprises to uphold professional standards.
