• Chemitei will now fly the UDA flag in the upcoming by-election, which was necessitated by the vacancy in the Senate seat. Political observers say the contest will be a test of UDA’s grip in the region, considered one of its bastions.

On Sunday, September 21, 2025, Vincent Kiprono Cheburet Chemitei secured victory in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Senatorial nominations, positioning himself as the party’s flag bearer ahead of the November 27 by-election.

Chemitei garnered 48,791 votes, outpacing his closest rival Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, who put up a spirited challenge but managed 30,897 votes. Daniel Kiptoo Korir followed in third place with 23,613 votes.

The rest of the aspirants received significantly fewer votes: Sylas Kipkogey Tochim (769), Evans Kiprotich Mundulel Bett (735), Joseph Rotich Cherutoi (172), Isaiah Kipkoros Kipkurnet (141), Linus Musa Kamket (118) and Reuben Chirchir Chepsongol (82).

Speaking after his victory, Chemitei thanked the people of Baringo for their overwhelming support. “This win is not mine alone but a reflection of the trust and hope that the people of Baringo have placed in me. I commit to serving with integrity and ensuring that their voices are heard in the Senate,” he said.

UDA officials at the county tallying centre in Kabarnet described the nomination as one of the most competitive in recent years, noting the high voter turnout across constituencies. “The exercise was largely peaceful and transparent, reflecting the democratic spirit of our party,” a returning officer said.

Meanwhile, political attention is now shifting to former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, who has been touted as a possible entrant in the by-election.

His re-entry into the race is expected to reshape the political landscape, reviving the long-standing KANU versus UDA rivalry in Baringo, a county that has historically been the Moi family’s political stronghold.
