• Although the gang has gone down, it has left behind a trail of sad memories and untold pain to the victims through the attacks

The security team deployed to hunt down a daring armed gang that has given Nakuru town residents sleepless nights in the past week has managed to round up five gang members and recovered an AK-47 supposedly to be used in their crime spree.

The security personnel, drawn from the DCI Operation Action Team and Crime Research Bureau, augmented their Nakuru counterparts in a well-coordinated raid that led to the successful flushing of the gang members from their hideouts.

After intensive interrogation, the security team, plus the gang, proceeded to the Rhonda area of Nakuru, where they recovered the AK-47, serial number 18916. The weapon was loaded with three rounds of ammunition. The gun was carefully concealed in dry grasses near a residential home, as reported by County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara.

Although the gang has gone down, it has left behind a trail of sad memories and untold pain to the victims through the attacks. On the night of June 1, one police officer on foot patrol was killed, and two were injured after the gang ambushed and opened fire on them.

Earlier on, in a separate incident, the gang had staged a violent robbery at a shop located in the Ngata area of Nakuru whereby a 24-year-old, the owner of the shop, was attacked with machetes before stealing hundreds of thousands from his shop.

Thereafter, the gang dragged the already injured young man from his shop and shot him dead.

The young man is said to have had a confrontation with the gang before they shot him in the stomach, killing him instantly.

Many other similar incidents have been reported around Nakuru town. For instance, an M-Pesa attendant was shot and injured last week around the Menengai area.

Thereafter, a man who responded to the scene was shot and killed instantly by the gang that was escaping.

A similar killing happened in the Mwariki area, an estate in the town environs, leaving a young man dead.

In the same week, two businessmen in the Bahati area and Nakuru town East had been attacked two days apart, sparking fears of a resurgence of criminal gangs in the city.

The five arrested have since been identified as William Nywhili Rioba, Nyahili Nyamuhaga Magige, Emmanuel Muita Muita, Catherine Nkatha Zakayo, and Peter Chacha.

The residents of Nakuru town dwellers have been reassured of their security by the DCI through the promise that 'the citizens' security remains the foremost priority, and several anti-robbery teams have been dispatched to pursue and identify armed gangs whose operations have already been analyzed.

This is an effort to end reigns of terror and get rid of armed criminals. The operations have been prompted by the fact that Nakuru town and its surroundings have been experiencing a surge in crime, raising concerns.

Although the DCI has intervened in the matter, it has done so somewhat late. The reason is that lives have already been lost, and families have been terrorized. Security matters should be treated as emergencies. Our security teams should never wait till lives are lost to intervene. Remember, no life is insignificant.
