• Appearing before the National Dialogue committee at Bomas of Kenya the Ag further suggested tightening of political party laws to make it difficult for MPs to defect to other political parties. “We should have law mechanisms of containing persons to the parties on whose platforms they were elected- AG GITHU MUIGAI

Former Attorney General Githu Muigai on Thursday, September 28, proposed that the current 290 constituencies and 47 counties be reduced to 100 and 14 respectively. “We have too many people in Parliament, we have too many constituencies and counties. They are costing us a lot of money. Reduce the constituencies to about 100 and have one man and one woman in each," he said.

The AG proposed that the constituencies be merged together to share the limited resources. He said that they are too many people in parliament and they are costing the country a lot of money.

Muigai also recommended that the funds including the CDF, Senate Oversight Fund as well as the National Government Affirmative Action Fund be entrenched in the Constitution.

Azimio spokesperson Makau Mutua via his X social media handle has supported former Attorney General Githu Muigai's remarks on reducing the number of leaders at Parliament. Mutua said that Kenyans are over-represented and overburdened by their representatives.

Muigai’s argument points on how the phenomenon can make the government can strain public finances, leading to unsustainable levels of government debt and taxation, which can burden future generations.

There is a need for Striking a balance between government involvement and individual liberty in order to cushion the harms if the representation is not balanced.
